Hello/Salaam, how are you all? A very belated Ramadan Mubarak to all who are observing this holy month of fasting. I have been MIA for too long, and I really hope to get better about this and blog more consistently! I was kind of embarrassed to blog now since it's been so long since my last post! Like 3 months and some odd days to be sort of exact. Anyways....since it's Ramadan I thought now would be an appropriate time to share a recipe that involved dates! Besides the fact that they are a sunnah food they are loaded with health benefits!

It's like pie...but healthier!


I love granola bars. Well then again, as my sister says, what don't I love when it comes to food? My friend and I were answering "best friend" tag questions just for fun at a dinner party and when she had to answer what my favorite food was, she answered "All of them!" I had a hard time disagreeing with her (although I will say I have a greater affinity towards sweets than other types of food, but if you've taken a look at my recipe index that shouldn't come as a surprise).

Anyways, I'm here to tell  you these granola bars are your new best friend! Slept in and now you're rushing to school/work/super-important-interview/dropping your kid off and no time for a wholesome, nutritious breakfast to power your busy morning??!!!! Or you're stuck in the office during your lunch break or you're sitting in class and all of a sudden a baby whale starts moaning from within the depths of your stomach? Well, no longer my friend! No longer do you have to fish out 6 freaking whole dollars for a measly box of 5 "healthy" granola bars (honestly, the few times I have picked up a box of those at the grocery store I was internally wincing that I was forking out so much money for a box of granola bars that wouldn't even last in my house for  2 days, let alone 2 weeks!) I don't know about you but I don't think any single granola bar is worth $1.20. Or maybe I just like a little bang with my buck. Or maybe I'm just Desi.

On Writing (+ a little poem)

Today, I would like to share something different. My blog is, for all intents and purposes, a food blog... but my vision for it is so much more. I want to try different kinds of posts: lifestyle/reflections/etc and so I would like to share a little piece I wrote. So here's the thing- ever since I was little I was an avid reader- I DEVOURED books and fell completely in love with characters and stories and it all inspired to me one day write my own novel. I just don't know if that will ever happen, haha. And I don't say that to be a debbie-downer or rain on anyone's dreams. I just don't think *I* personally have the time and patience to write an entire novel. I do write. Sometimes instead of working on an essay I'll pull up a Word doc and start writing...usually if I get a random burst of inspiration (and of course it happens right before an exam when I should be studying). But it's so difficult for me to come up with an entire plot! So I kind of have turned to poetry.

Pain au Chocolat (pronounced "pa oh shoh/koh/lah" according to this) is a French pastry filled with chocolate. Now there's probably a more traditional way to make this...but I like quick, easy recipes. And I'm sure you guys like quick, easy recipes, too. So I'm giving you guys a quick, easy "cheater" version of pain au chocolat.

Snow Day!

One more week until Spring Break (!!) and it's super hectic around these parts. I had three exams last week and after my second midterm on Wednesday I was so zapped I barely studied for my Social Psych exam the next day...so I told myself I would wake up early that morning to study for my 1 o'clock exam. I ended up snoozing my alarm but then received a notification from my university: Classes & events canceled all day for Thursday, March 5th due to inclement weather. 

I was so excited and I went back to sleep until 10 am. My youngest brother, Z, (whose obsessed with weather- like weirdly so) came into my room announcing we had real, substantial snow! And sure enough by then I had a bunch of friends snap-chatting me their front yards with the caption "Winter Wonderland!!!!!". So cliche but hey I can understand the excitement, since snow is not super regular around here.

This blog is really for me, as an amateur baker, to document the things I bake (or cook) at home. Kind of like an online recipe book, but for the world to see. (I also have a cute blue recipe book with white polka dots my sister-in-law gave me because I love physically writing things down!). I'm not a recipe developer or anything. I'm more of a recipe follower, so I always make sure to give credit where credit's due :)

Anyways, one of the things I want to get down pat is baking brownies! For years and years I have used box mixes, and can you blame me? They're super simple, take minimal effort, and  you're guaranteed a tasty treat at the end all for a few dollars?  I'll take that. But as I've begun making things from scratch it's just  a whole different ball game- in a good way! Baking is truly a labor of love. And while I can say I'm content with the chocolate cupcake and chocolate chip cookie recipe I  have right now on the blog, one thing I don't have is a surefire brownie recipe! I've tried a few different ones. They were mediocre and one just turned out bad.

This particular recipe is by Tessa Arias on her blog called the "Ultimate Brownies".  I'm not totally taken with these brownies but I have to say they are pretty great! The problem I had was with the flavor...it was a little off, but perhaps this was through some fault of my own. Also I felt my brownies were a little too underbaked- we all know you should never overbake brownies but even though I left mine in for the directed time they were still pretty wet even after I let them cool. It wasn't until the next day did they set up more firmly.

If you're looking for a brownie recipe to try, I would say go for it!
